A Letter To My Friend Narrating How I Changed Since I Started High School

722 words | 3 page(s)

Dear Friend,
It is funny and sometimes scary how all of us begin from similar beginnings when we join high school and then end up in different places in life. Day one in high school was not any different; because I was completely in a new environment, a surrounding I was not used to especially the new faces I came across. I did not have a friend in this school and everyone starting from the school staffs to students was people I had never met in my life. I would be lying if I said I was not scared, the thought of adapting to a completely new experience and making new friends scared the hell out of me. How was I supposed to make new friends when the only friends I had were Kate and Jim my childhood friends who were not here.

Each one of us has either heard the phrase, “high school is what you make of it.” Indeed, it is true that high school is what one can make of it; however, what is rarely mentioned is the fact everybody in high school undergoes several changes. On my first day in high school, I felt like a young child. I could not understand why my parents wanted me in that particular school, knowing very well that I had no friend in that very school. At this stage, my post-secondary choices, as well as career choices, were not on the top of my priority list. It was not until I was in twelfth grade that I became mature thus started seeing myself as an adult, which meant that my future was in my hands.

Tracing back while at my 9th grade and in the twelfth grade, I can see how my character has changed, athletic wise as well as my goals in life. Comparing myself to grade 9 and the twelfth grade, I can say I have undergone drastic changes in terms acquiring time management skills. During my first semester in high school, I never talked to anyone leave alone socialize, and I was even scared of answering questions in class. In fact, I used to wonder how other students would think of me especially if I ended up giving a wrong answer. It was during the second semester that I learned that each one of us was just as scared as I was. Indeed, I discovered this after meeting Lena, the first lady I talked to who later became my friend. How we became friends is a mystery, we just bumped into one another in the restroom, and then we started exchanging over the previous semester. Since 9th grade until now in 12th grade, I have been able to make more friends apart from Lena. I can proudly say I now have three best friends and I am more sociable with almost all the classmates and teammates. However, over the years, I have lost some of my friends the best being, one of them being Nick who we disagreed along the way.

Nonetheless, I have also experienced significant changes in the field of athletics. Even though some may see it as a mute point and worth not mentioning, today, engaging in sporting activities has become part of my life. Until now, sporting activities have positively influenced my life. While in 9th grade, I was scared of joining the school team because I had not made friends even though in my previous school I used to be an athlete. In fact, I was scared of showing my capabilities to people whom I felt like a stranger to them. I finally dared to join the athlete team, and as a result, we won the Female MVP for that particular season. My goal is to become one of the worlds’ known athletes. In addition, my career choices have changed along with post-secondary goals thus today my goal is to apply for a place in public colleges or universities like Canadore College. I currently work as a part-time employee, which has taught me how to save money. I was jobless while in my 9th grade where I used to believe it was my parent’s responsibility to give me money. I know how it feels to work and make money as well as save, which I believe is what you also practice.

Yours Sincerely,
