A Memoir about the Impact of the Teacher

458 words | 2 page(s)

This story begins with a brief insight into my early teens and revolves around the personality of my history teacher Mr. Richards and around his impact on me. If in middle school, studies seemed an easy and understandable thing and I used to have no problems with grades, in high school everything changed. One day I simply stopped being interested in having to study. The very thought of going to college one day in order to study more made me feel disgusting as if I tasted black licorice. My parents were panicky. They thought I would give up high school. At some moment I thought so as well. However, the life-changing experience of learning under the supervision of my high school teacher of history, Mr Richards, inspired me to succeed in my school studies and look forward to entering college.

It is impossible to guess what my life would be like if I had not met Mr Richards. I was a rebellious teen, who had quite maximalist views. Unlike those teachers and some of my classmates that often opposed my radical views and had debates with me (which angered me a lot), Mr Richards never argued with me. Instead, he almost always agreed with lots of stuff I was speaking about! Obviously, his vision was rather different from mine, yet he happened to never let me think that my teenage thoughts were either inferior or stupid. He not only did give me a chance to openly speak my mind; he also listened very carefully, and he often asked questions which could help him understand flow of my mixed thoughts. When I recall our talks, I see his strong build, his sunburnt face, and his shrewd and warm eyes. Mr Richards was a pleasant looking man in his mid-thirties, yet his voice was husky, so he sounded as if he were an older person. Yet, the slight smell of fresh sea breeze around the teacher (I guess Mr Richards favorite perfume was Man from Hugo Boss) reminded us that he was young and lively and at the same time, as suggested by his voice, wise and caring.

What Mr Richards gave me was his sense of respecting the other. Thanks to this respectful attitude, he was able to turn the class atmosphere into a unique atmosphere of openness, fairness, and natural respect. He became my idol then! I observed how responsibly Mr Richards conducted classes, how thoroughly he prepared, and how kind his attitude was to all of us. All this made me realize: I had to develop the same approach to my future occupation. Needless to say, Mr Richards has the best impact on me as I resumed my interest in studies and decided to enter a college.
