A specialty nursing role that is of interest to me in advancing my nursing career is that of a hospital case manager. This reflects my career goals of contributing to more comprehensive care for patients, and ensuring the healthcare system serves Americans in achieving and maintaining wellness.
The RN case manager serves and supports patients who might otherwise be lost or overwhelmed in the complexities of the healthcare system. The major responsibilities in this role include determining and implementing care pathways that would ensure the best short and long term outcomes for a patient. Attention to the bigger picture of healthcare and planning care ensures a more comprehensive and efficient approach which a patient cannot be expected to manage without the support of a specialist such as a nursing case manager who has the knowledge and experience to navigate the system.

While there are multiple settings for this role, including positions with health insurance companies, my desired setting is in a hospital working directly with patients and their families. In a position working for health insurance companies I do not think that the patient’s interest would always come first; this is an aspect that is very important to me and my nursing philosophy.
With regard to the population I wish to care for, I see my future position as a case manager as one where I work with families which include individuals of all ages and diverse backgrounds. In this way I can serve the entire community in this role.
At a minimum a Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required in order to qualify for case management positions in a hospital setting, although there is a growing preference for advanced degrees such as a Master of Science in Nursing. A further degree will be something for me to consider as I advance in my career.
