Biostatement

As humans, we definitely tend to very selfish and self-centered, and unfortunately I am no exception. Sure, I care about the environment and other beings, and I even recycle, volunteer my time, and avoid eating meat that is not free range. On the other hand, I drive a car (even when I could walk), I use a gas stove for cooking, I use a lot of electricity, I shower often, and when I am lazy, I throw recyclables in the trash. I may sound like a bad person, but it is my opinions that the majority of humans act this way. It is not that I don’t care, but because the benefits of one person’s efforts are so miniscule (and cannot be immediately seen), it is easy to discount the difference on person can actually make.

Furthermore, as humans, we are very motivated by immediate gratification, so when the reward or result does not come quickly, we are much less motivated to expend energy. Finally, many of the benefits that can come from my efforts to conserve the environment will not touch me personally, but may help those hundreds of years from now. Again, this is not to sound harsh, but if I was told that in 5 years the Earth would heat up to 200 degrees if I don’t stop using gasoline, then I would be much more motivated to stop using it.

That being said, when I think about what so many of my actions do to the environment, I am convinced that we should all make a greater effort. I think pollution is NOT okay and the greenhouse effect IS a BIG deal. Our Earth is heating up and there may come a day when all turns to flames. I absolutely disagree that humans should be the only consideration when building new houses and roads. Deforestation is killing the habitats of animals and reducing the amount of greenery, which is raising carbon dioxide levels. We have certainly turned into a species of consumers, giving way to material possessions and technology.

This behavior needs to stop and we need to start making sacrifices so that other species can thrive. We should realize that by sacrificing, we actually get more in return. For example, do we really need 10,000 sq. foot mansions, while wildlife are displaced into urban neighborhoods? When such shifts are made in the natural food chain and evolution, everyone on the planet is affected. I need to keep that in mind next time I get lazy to wash out the empty ketchup bottle.
