Introduction

Civility in nursing is a new health care industry ethical concept for practicing medical practitioners. To this effect, studies conducted on the rationale of adoption of civility concepts have established that it enhances health care services. In particular, the nurses’ patients’ service quality is affected. Nurses relate and interact with patients more than other medical professionals. Consequently, studies have been conducted to establish right intervention measures to improve civility among nurses. Hence, the paper discusses civility in nursing and its rationale. Moreover, the paper conducts a review on the research on developing civility intervention measures among nursing students conducted by Jenkins, Kerber and Woith on April 2013.

An Intervention to Promote Civility among Nursing Students
In analyzing the concept of civility in nursing, Jenkins, Kerber and Woith conducted an exploratory study to establish an ideal intervention measure to build social capital and civility among nursing students. The findings of the study are recorded in the Nursing education perspectives journal, volume 34, issue 2 (pp. 95-100). The study was informed by the need of civility practices on nursing students’ industry performance. Earlier studies had established that incivility among nursing impacted on career development and led to unethical and improper patience care services. Consequently, the institute of decline recommended the development of an insight into rightful intervention measures. The study provided a solution to this challenge.

The study incorporated a mixed method approach. In this case, the study developed three different types of questionnaires. 95 students filled questioners’ on peer civility satisfaction behavior. Moreover, 25 filled questionnaires on ways of coping with incivility among other students. Additionally, 10 participated in a journal club civility in nursing. The use of the mixed strategies and approach provided an opportunity for the exploratory provided an avenue for evaluation of varied intervention measures. Through the use of these strategies, the study exhaustively evaluated the strategies to establish an ideal intervention measure to enhance civility among nursing students.

The study established that there was a relationship between students’ civility education and civility behaviors. The study established that students who took part in the intervention program experienced behavior change. Such students demonstrated increased civility. Moreover, the study established that, students in the program restrained from engaging in uncivil behaviors. This was attributed to increased knowledge on the need for adoption of civil behaviors. Additionally, the study revealed that the students exhibited supportive characteristics to peers. The study further revealed that such disclosed increased avoidance on uncivil behaviors.

Conclusively, the study established that use of focus journal clubs enhanced civility among nursing students. This was attributed to increased civility need knowledge amongst the students. Consequently, the study recommended that such an intervention measure should be adopted to enhance civility among nursing students.

Definition and understanding of civility
Civility is an important concept at any workplace. Clark (2013) defines civility as those behavioral attributes such as listening to other people without discrimination that promote orderliness. The author also goes ahead to define incivility as disruptive behaviors that tend to disregard common ground as stressed on in civility. In this case, it is vital to note that civility is tied with behavioral attributes that promote professionalism. Civility is a fundamental subject that has been discussed for a very long time.

The definition of civility encompasses the respect an individual shows towards others. The value of bringing other people’s criticisms on board respectfully and solving them amicably forms the cornerstone of civility. In order to influence effective communication between individuals, civility is the first step that ensures such mutual relationships exist (Kavaler & Alexander, 2012, p. 100). The understanding of being civil implies that individuals uphold behavior and morals regardless of differences that exist between them. Civility also embraces principles supporting collaboration as individuals continue to respect each other.

Characteristics of civil behavior I would consider in the academic and clinical setting
Civility values diversity and, therefore, an important aspect when it comes to the kind of behavior manifested in the academic and clinical setting. The professionals in this setting should, therefore, be in a position to manifest courteous behavior to those whom they interact with when giving out their services. They should be honest and show respect to those people and not violent behavior.

Acts of incivility I have witnessed and the feelings I had about the behavior.
Sometimes in the past, I witnessed a case of incivility. The case involved two nurses who were verbally abused by a patient. Furthermore, the patient overstepped her principles by racially abusing the nurses. The impression of this incident had devastating effects on the nurses. Whereas the dignity of the nurses was tampered with, their confidence and worth significance was also diminished.

Ways to increase civility, collaboration and collegiality in the school of nursing.
Increasing civility involves drawing a cut of division of hierarchies between the nursing professionals and students. Emphasis should be placed on creating mutual respect between all those individuals in the school of nursing. Discourses such as dressing codes and respecting other people’s differences perpetuates the virtue of civility.

Summary
Conclusively, the paper establishes that indeed civility plays a role in enhancing health care services. Moreover, the research article reviewed recommends the use of focus journal groups as an ideal intervention measure for stimulating civility in nursing institutions. The definitions of civility presented in this paper enhance the understanding of creating that favorable environment for peaceful co-existence. This paper has also elucidated on various aspects of civility such as respecting another person’s differences and resolving criticisms in a respectful way. Civility is, therefore, imperative for improving the well-being of professionals and the students particularly in the school of nursing.
