The event was held on 15th April, 2015 at Hofstra University in a multipurpose room in North Campus. It aimed at increasing awareness about Alzheimer’s disease (The American Public Health Association, 2015). The topic of the event was ‘Raise your voice for care’ and was held by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of American College Initiative. During the event, a description of the condition was highlighted. In fact, Alzheimer’s disease was defined as a progressive and a degenerative disorder that attacks the nerve cells of the brain (The American Public Health Association, 2015).

As a result, patients experience loss of memory, thinking and language skills as well as behavioral changes. Notably, the leaders contended that the condition has adversely affected many Americans, especially those who were above sixty-five years. Leaders informed the audience that they were determined to demonstrate the efforts of those who were concerned and advocated the population’s welfare. Thus, they agreed to hold a series of events, such as academic panel, concerts, workshops, and virtual tours (The American Public Health Association, 2015). It is critical to underscore that the event was attended by significant dignitaries, the US president included.

The chairperson was a man who was a charismatic leader and utilized transformational leadership style. There was evidence of morale in the group that was holding the event, and he seemed to interact with other leaders freely. Notably, the Chairman ensured that he stirred the emotions of people, especially when they were silent as advocated by the transformational theorists (Avolio, Walumbwa & Weber, 2009). He was also concerned with the patients’ needs as well as the needs of his team.

The manner in which he addressed his team showed that there was respect for them. His team looked dedicated and looked beyond their self-interests. This aligns with the qualities of the transformational leader as Best and Holmes (2010) note. The vice-chairperson was a lady and acknowledged the vital role the chairman plays in inspiring the team to reach for the improbable. In addition, as the event was continuing, he was moving around talking with his team. This showed that he engaged them in the decision-making process, an act that is done by a transformational leader (Grant, 2012; Moynihan, Pandey & Wright, 2012). During his speech, the leader ascertained that the speech he was delivering belonged to all the members of the foundation and he was giving it on their behalf.

This is a clear indication that the leader acknowledges the role of each team member. Transformational leaders delegate responsibilities to different people in the workplace (Moynihan et al., 2012; Nahavandi, 2014). This was demonstrated by the chairman when he invited his deputy to inform the delegates present about the events they will be hosting as efforts to help to reduce the effects of the condition, which is taking many American lives every year. Individualized consideration, which is critical in the transformational leadership style was demonstrated when he welcomed some of the delegates to address the people (Nahavandi, 2014). He allowed them to share their ideas concerning the condition and recognized the contribution of each member and those that were present. The leader explicitly explains the goals and the objectives of the foundation in relation to trying to increase awareness about the disease (Nahavandi, 2014).

Arguably, the style of leadership contributed to the success of the event. This is for the reason that those who were present felt motivated because the chairman clearly communicated the vision of the foundation and the objectives of hosting the events. By engaging all the team members, the president was helping them to develop themselves with regard to skills and knowledge (Koh, 2009). This resulted in increased cooperation among the members and everybody in the event was busy doing something because each member was assigned some responsibilities. This made the work easier because each participant was involved and time was saved. The speech delivered by the chairman highlighted some of the changes that would take place in the organization. This showed that he was creative and innovative in building the culture of the organization as Koh (2009) argues.
