Men and women tend to exhibit some communication differences in the workplace. The development of perceptions and attitudes is one of the most common causes of the communication differences between men and women. Men seem to be more tolerant and are likely to persist in a certain situation than women. The cultural differences in the communication capabilities of the members of the sexes is also one of the causes of the differences. In a communication engagement, men tend to seek more acknowledgement and attention whereas women seek to be part of the communication team.

Negative non-verbal communication is one of the common causes of communication breakdown. Inappropriate facial expressions are some of the most common negative non-verbal communications. These expressions are likely to change the attitudes of the communicating partners through sending the wrong signals and thus inhibiting the communication process. Lack of eye contact is also a manifestation of negative non-verbal communication. Eye contact assists in keeping a high level of engagement through increasing concentration among the communicating parties.

Culture defines other people’s norms and believes and sometimes dictates the manner in which they are supposed to dress. Peer pressure can also influence an organization’s dress code. Globalization is one of the most common aspects of the society today. Globalization is likely to affect the dress codes of individuals because it establishes the trends in the social structures.
