What kind of leader were you?

The eighteen -question quiz demonstrates that my type of the leadership style is Democratic. Democratic leaders are also called participative, since they always pay attention to other group members and their beliefs. The process of decision making and problem solving always coincide with common discussion and deliberation of possible pros and cons. However, the final decision is always made by the leader. Such style of leadership is especially encouraged by the team members, since it takes their opinions into account. Accurate and efficient decisions are the main results democratic leadership can bring. The democratic leader realizes that he or she cannot know everything, that is why mutual understanding and discussion are crucially important for success. Opinions of other members of the team provide a complete basis for decision making in the democratic leadership style. Thinking of the organization as a constant team building is a specific feature of such kind of leadership.

How does this fit into your beliefs about your leadership style?
Democratic style of leadership fits into my beliefs about my leadership attributes. I have never been too authoritarian to make people do what they do not want to, but what is significant for me. Besides, I always respect people, who are the good specialists and professionals of a particular deal. As well as I cannot be aware of everything in the nursing sphere, I think, it is efficient to get a piece of advice from the experts. Precisely the combination and efficient collaboration of appropriate leadership, encouragement, motivation, and mutual understanding can manage the process and helps to make the correct decisions.

The results of the quiz were not surprising, as I do not have enough knowledge how to delegate the tasks, which should be done as soon as possible. Moreover, I always prefer the liberal style of behavior, based on respect, care, and common authority. I do not think one person can manage everything, especially in such a complicated sphere as nursing. Only a good team can provide success of the organization. Manipulating, authoritative pressure, and abuse are not inherent features of my character, and are excluded from my behavior. Democratic attitude to others is the only appropriate style of leadership for my personality, since it reflects my outlook and lifestyle. Thus, democratic leadership style fits into my character and personal mission.

Examine the attributes of leadership that may be needed for graduate level nurses.
The graduate level nurses should possess leadership attributes in their daily routine necessarily. It means that they are visionary, equipped with strategies, a plan and desire to direct their teams and services to a future goal (Frankel, 2008). It is highly important for a nurse to be dynamic, maintain the effectiveness of the group work, have the ability to motivate and encourage others. Graduate nurses should be concentrated not only on operations needed, but mainly on problem solving and integrity of the group. A decent level of resilience and flexibility is also significant for graduate nurses to help them to respond correctly and support the members of their team.

Graduate nurses should eliminate compassion fatigue and build strategies of satisfaction (Dickson & Beech, 2016). The true leaders in nursing should be able to see the future and create successful communication inside the group. In order to possess all these attributes, the graduate nurses should have enough level of self-confidence and self-reflection. They should not be afraid of taking risks, since failure is a feature that helps to learn something new and overcome problems in future. Self-confidence does not mean arrogance, since graduate nurses should possess respect of other beliefs and cultures as a necessary attribute of their leadership.

Analyze your personal leadership attributes you feel you have that will help you in your graduate nursing role.
Participative character, compassion, respect of others, work as a team, encouragement and motivation of the team members are the most important attributes, which will help me in my graduate nursing role. It is significant that I am aware of religious and cultural diversity as a key aspect of the differences between patients and team members. Respect for other world views, statements, beliefs, and styles of behavior is also a positive attribute, which will help me to become a good graduate nurse. Besides, I am aware of the necessity to think as a team and solve the problems via the common mind. Graduate nursing does not mean having the deepest knowledge and the greatest practical experience. Each member of the group matters, since his or her opinion can be based on far more professional involvement, than a graduate nurse possesses at the moment.

As a democratic leader, I will be good at conflict solving, since the elimination of all possible conflict situations is my true priority at work. The group members will always be encouraged and motivated to work hard and creative enough to progress. However, the decision making will always end up with my opinion. Nobody will feel uncomfortable because of this, since common discussion will always precede the final decision. It is also efficient that I will be able to plan the future, since I will think of the organization as a team that needs to develop and improve.

Despite numerous positive attributes of my personal democratic leadership, I should develop several features from other leadership styles. For instance, I feel the lack of authoritarian features, since group members need not only motivation and encouraging, but also a strength of authoritarian will. Such kind of a will is useful in case of the lack of knowledge, possessed by the team members.

Besides, democratic leadership lacks the aspects of delegative style, since the leader makes the decisions only on his own. In contrast, it is sometimes more useful not only to collect professional opinions of the team members, but delegate the particular tasks among the group. The truly advanced nursing roles “include the need for a collaborative, systemic and evidence-based process designed to create environments that support these roles (Bryant-Lukosius et al., 2004).
