Different Methods Of Teaching The Classroom

501 words | 2 page(s)

Over the years, educators and researchers have identified a number of teaching methods, each of which is associated with specific advantages and limitations.

Dialogic teaching uses the power of constructive dialogue to stimulate students’ thinking and facilitate both their learning and understanding. Unlike more traditional teaching methods which rely on monologues and unilateral presentations, dialogic teaching encourages teachers and students to exchange ideas and engage in mutually-beneficial discussions. This particular teaching method requires teachers to listen to their students and actively prompt them to share their opinions and views. Research has clearly demonstrated that when students are allowed to contribute to classroom dialogue, they find it easier to identify their own limitations and overcome any potentially detrimental misunderstandings. One of the main advantages of dialogic teaching is that teachers can explore their students’ perspectives and developing ideas, while students get to try new ways of communicating. It is also worth pointing out that dialogic teaching prompts students to see language as an effective way to construct knowledge.

With technology affecting the way in which we perform most of our daily activities, it is no surprise that “Learning with Technologies” has emerged as a valid teaching method. In today’s world, it is crucial that teachers should encourage students to appreciate the value and usefulness of technology by selecting appropriate tools and using them in such a way to make learning more entertaining and effective. Technologies have been found to play a key role in improving students’ learning abilities whilst encouraging them to exploit their own creativity to innovate. Technology is perfectly compatible with most subjects: both marketing and social studies require an understanding of how blogs and social media work; photo-editing software and presentation tools can help Art and Photography teachers to get their message across through visual aids; finally, computer games and interactive whiteboards can prove very useful to Maths and Science teachers.

Thanks to its ability to maximise student engagement, the “Flipped Classroom” method is currently being employed by numerous academic institutions across the world. Unlike traditional methods of teaching, the Flipped Classroom method allows students to access learning material at home. Students view slideshows, watch videos and read notes at home, and then return to school to discuss what they have learned with their teachers and complete the kind of exercises that they would normally have for homework. One of the main advantages of this teaching method is that it allows students to sit down, relax and learn at their own pace, thus prompting them to apply the concepts they have acquired at home in the classroom.

I personally believe that the Flipped Classroom is the most effective teaching method out there as it requires students to rely on their own abilities and motivation to learn, thus making them more independent. Unlike traditional teaching methods, the Flipped Classroom makes it possible for students to access a large amount of learning material from the comfort of their own homes, without any distractions or pressure from their classmates or teacher.
