This statement reminds us communication doesn’t take place in the most obvious forms only such as verbal and written but also takes other forms. These other forms of communication include our experiences, non-verbal messages such as face expressions and body language, and even our responses that may be muted in nature. After all, communication takes place when a message is delivered and received and a message doesn’t always take a verbal or written form. For instance, a person may express his displeasure or anger without uttering a single word.

There is a reason effective communication often involves not just listening but also paying attention to the other party whose non-verbal cues may be more helpful than the verbal messages, especially, if the verbal and non-verbal messages contradict each other. The importance of non-verbal and non-written forms of communication also arises from the fact that they hold greater importance in some cultures. In high-context cultures, verbal communication often reveals only partial messages and the failure to pay attention to the emotions, face expressions, and body language as well as lack of cultural knowledge may significantly increase the risk of miscommunication.

It is also important to realize that non-verbal forms of communication such as experiences, emotions, and the unspoken messages may enhance or reduce the effectiveness of the verbal messages. If verbal and non-verbal messages contradict each other, the speaker may come across as dishonest or unreliable. Similarly, if the verbal and non-verbal messages complement each other, the speaker may seem credible. The speakers also benefit from having good knowledge of non-verbal communication because they can modify the message according to the non-verbal cues from the audience.
