This research involves an intervention for the implementation of an alcohol-based sanitizer for professionals working in orthopedic practice. The rationale for the methodology is based on Rogers diffusion theory. This theory holds that in order for new approaches to practice to be developed, key leaders must adopt them first (Pashaeypoor, Ashktorab, Rassouli, & Alavi-Majd, 2016). The intervention involves educating key personnel in and orthopedic practice on the use of alcohol-based sanitizer’s and their role in preventing the spread of bacteria among patients and other staff.

The rationale is based on the concept that a person’s within the orthopedic practice understand the importance of the program, they will be more likely to adopt the new practices (Northouse, 2015). The data collection for this study will utilize a mixed methodology involving both quantitative and qualitative data. Involves observation to determine the baseline frequency of alcohol-based soap use. The second set of data will involve qualitative interviews to determine the frequency and outcome of alcohol-based soap use.

The objective of the study is to determine the current level of alcohol-based soap use and to increase its use among staff. The quantitative portion of the study establishes the baseline and current level of alcohol-based soap use. The interviews will be used to determine if the frequency of alcohol-based soap use improves after the intervention. Structured interviews will allow the researcher to compare levels of alcohol-based soap use after the intervention to those that occurred before the intervention took place. Statistical methods will be used to evaluate the validity of the quantitative observations and data on alcohol-based soap use before and after the intervention. The reliability of the study will be supported by the use of secondary data collected through the use of interviews.

The results of the intervention and its effects on alcohol-based soap use among orthopedic professionals will be applicable to other areas of the medical field where patient contact is frequent and has the potential to spread bacteria. Using the theory that leadership is the key to achieving change in regard to patient safety practices, this study will provide information that may be useful to others who wish to improve sanitation in the medical environment.

If the outcomes of the intervention do not provide positive results, the interviews may be utilized to understand the reasoning for the lack of effectiveness. Many other variables may be responsible for the adoption of alcohol-based hand sanitizer use that may go beyond the scope of the current research study. For instance, cultural factors and beliefs about the effectiveness of alcohol-based sanitizers may affect the willingness to adopt their use. The interviews will provide formation on the types of resistance that affect the intervention, and may provide clues as to how to overcome them in the educational program. It may also provide information on areas that were not addressed in the design of the intervention, or the research study. The use of the interviews may help the researcher to understand these factors into develop methods for overcoming them in the future.

This research has implications in several areas of academic study, and clinical practice. First, it examines the effectiveness of utilizing a leadership as a means to achieve positive organizational change. The second implication is that it has the potential to reduce the spread of bacterial infections among both staff and patients in the orthopedic setting. This also has implications beyond the orthopedic setting and provides information on how to improve sanitation practices in any clinical field where staff have direct patient contact. It will provide a means to improve knowledge about effective programs to produce organizational change that will have a positive outcome the organization, the staff, and the patients that they serve.
