Performance management is an ongoing process throughout the year, one which allows supervisors to work to communicate with their employees for the purposes of accomplishing the strategic goals and objectives of the organization (Aguinis, 2013). Performance management works to ensure that all the employees within the organization are held to a certain level of accountability, and that all employees are working to ensure that they are completing their jobs based on the scope set for and by the organization (Performance Management, 2013).

One such performance appraisal process is the performance review system wherein, depending on the organization, employee performance is reviewed either quarterly, every six months, or every year, working to ensure that the individual’s performance standards are up to par with the company’s standards, and determining whether or not the individual has exceeded expectations, and as such is deserving of a raise. Performance appraisal processes work to ensure that the organization is able to meet all of its strategic goals, such as ensuring that metrics are being met, that customer service levels are high, or that the company is on par to meet its yearly goals.

I have worked at organizations that utilized performance management and performance appraisals and organizations that have determined that such measures were not necessary. The type of organization I was working for played a large role in determining whether or not a well-defined performance management system was needed. Smaller organizations did not need a formal or well-defined performance management system as all individuals worked together as a coherent unit, though the larger companies and corporations found performance management to be a necessary part of the management of all employees due to the larger number of individuals employed. Smaller companies, those employing only 5-10 people never had the need.
