Family As A Key Factor In My Personal Development

504 words | 2 page(s)

My family stands at the center of my life as the factor that has most influenced me. I have learned many things from them, including the importance of honesty, love, and kindness. Likewise, social interactions with the community have helped to shape the person I am. I have found that every interaction has shaped me in a way, whether it has come at school, on the street, or even at a family dinner.

My supportive family is large, and we spent tremendous time together. Though we are all busy, we take time to discuss our day, and my father makes sure that we feel valued. Though he can often be strict, he gives us the ability to make our own decisions, trusting that we will do the right thing. He often focuses on life’s little things, and the effect is felt most profoundly on my subconscious. A person’s character primarily consists of his reaction to certain events in his life, and many of these reactions are subconscious. My father’s example shines through in me.

My interactions with society have taught me that many people are ignorant or unaware of the many issues that exist in society. From poverty to widespread illness to civil rights abuses, these things subsist and thrive because too many are either unaware of or apathetic to the problems. Banal moral platitudes are useless if not backed up by action. How can we, as a society, ask for more when our neighbors are often rummaging through the garbage for food?

School has been about much more than interacting with society. My parents have stressed the importance of education. I have come to find that at the end of one’s program, if that person has applied himself enough, a transformation takes place, altering the person’s modes of thinking. My horizons have been broadened, and I have approached life with a new perspective.

My time in the International Baccalaureate program has taught me to be a thoughtful, inquisitive person. While it is difficult to do the right thing at all times, I have learned to be more selfless, and I have some to appreciate life’s little things. Seeing how this first program has impacted my life has made me yearn for even more education, which I hope to get from the University of California. With that knowledge, I will be able to use my skills to improve the world not just for myself, but for others.

My family’s metadido philosophy has been hugely important for me. Each human interaction is an opportunity to learn, and education has been invaluable thus far in my life. I eventually hope to run a socially responsible business that allows me to help people while supporting myself. My background has left me certain that the only way to live a decent life is to use one’s skills to care for those in need. I intend for what I have learned in the past to shape the contours of my future.
