Another HIE organization, Great Lakes Health Connect, has a mission to connect a network of possibilities, including physicians, public health, specialty providers, health plans, medications, hospitals and clinics, lab tests and XRAYs, and patients and families. Strong connection is a basic principle of HIE functionality in Great Lakes Health Connect. The organization establishes the referrals application that allows health systems, physicians, payers, and behavioral health providers a secure repository for sending and receiving referrals throughout Michigan. The organization implements Virtual Integrated Patient Record that is a community-wide, longitudinal repository. It contains statewide information on patients, including lab results, radiology, pathology, AFT, and transcribed documents. Secure web viewer provides an access to these records. VIPR services proposes real-time access to statewide patient health information and improve communication and administrative efficiency of health care. Besides, real-time notifications of the patients’ admissions and discharges are available from over 90 Michigan Hospitals for now. Patient care documents provided by GLHC include DPOAH, DPOA, DNR, SOTP, organ donation, physician order for life sustaining treatment, action plans, and patient care plans.

These documents support and enhance patient centered care, provide the real-time access to the patient’s information, expedite treatment and care planning, empower patients, and support healthcare goals. As for the results’ delivery, GLHC implements three methods: EMR, network folder, and iNBox application installed on one’s network. GLHC cooperates with Michigan Center for Effective Information Technology Adoption, centers for Medicaid and Medicare services, Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, and Center for Disease Control and Prevention. GLHC allows health care providers and organizations to connect to State of Michigan Registries for reportable labs, newborn screening, cancer registry, and other important issues.
