Hegel’s argument that the root of human suffering is found within man’s inability to accept the human reality is grounded in the concept that mankind continuously feels the need and responsibility to exert one’s free will, alienation, and the pursuit to end history through reaching a pure form and the ending of opposition. The philosophy of Hegel offers explanations for the relationships between man versus man and man versus nature through the power and energy of the opposition. There are both explanations and voids of explanations that offer evidence for validation and room for growth within the philosophy. However, through this explanation of life and history, Hegel’s wisdom has offered the basis of an expansion of philosophical thoughts.

When first considering the existence of society and the importance of personal development through struggles and opposition, Hegel explained the importance of the Master/Slave or the Lordship and Bondsman relationship in regards to the development of mankind. According to Hegel, this relationship benefits the Lordship in the immediate but, in terms of gaining self recognition, the Bondsman actually benefits to a greater extent. For example, the Lord achieves a state of Mastery but then must spend the rest of his life maintaining that status. On the contrary, the individual in bondage learns to master his environment, work hard, and press to elevate himself. In this respect, the slave is capable of a self recognition and consciousness that the Master will never have the opportunity to achieve.

This is one of the elements of hard work that Hegel found to be extremely important. This pushed the relationship between independence and dependency. This is true as the worker finds his own manner of independently overcoming the limitations that are set forth by the master. Additionally, hard work established an ethical goal when one was working for a common good for the community. The goal or end result that Hegel spoke of was that eventually all men would work freely, not for a master, but for the betterment of the society. This comes in the attempt to comprehend freedom as it is a matter of will.

Although it is plausible for a man to think in terms of freewill or to believe that his actions are in fact based on the principle of freedom, in reality, everything seems to work in a manner of dependency and must be balanced between freedom and responsibilities. Therefore, man cannot truly be free and still progress within a society. It is rather acceptable that a man must adhere to social needs and avoid the realities of giving in to evil.

The progression of history that outlines the philosophical approaches of Hegel suggests that history is a continuation of man to find freedom, reach a greater goal, and move beyond the evils that have been a part of world history. Therefore, the given history was a necessary part of man’s journey. This journey, according to Hegel, will come to an end when conflict and opposition has all been eliminated. Although Hegel was a wise man in his compilation of philosophical thought and recognized the need for hard work and progression in humanity, the concept that history would end through the elimination of conflict has yet to be witnessed nor does it appear to be on the cusp of the possibilities of reality.
