Impact of Laws and Regulations of the Internet and Social Media Environment on the Workplace

317 words | 2 page(s)

During the web search, it was discovered that the employment-related regulations were reviewed in order to meet the new realia. In this way, the laws and regulation of the Internet and social media environment are incorporated in the procedures related to organizing workplace. Specifically, in their codes of conduct, organizations commonly state that the use of social media and the Internet should not disturb the working process. Additionally, some organizations may limit that access to particular social media platforms from the computers they provide the employees or via wireless networks accessible from office (Miller, 2016). The latter is necessary for protecting non-public information and minimizing the risks of information theft.

Considering the results of the conducted web search, the conclusion is that organizations rarely report on their progress in regulating social media environment just like they do not report on the failures. However, there are still some trends that can be noted here. For instance, the main issue that makes the regulations ineffective is the unwillingness of the senior management to follow the rule. In other words, in organizations that fail, the regulations are not universal for all employees. Another vital issue is the improper organization of the control procedures. It means that employees are expected to follow the rules, but the access to them is not restricted so that violations of the procedures are complicated to avoid.

The issues mentioned above demonstrate that managers do not understand the criticality of the laws and regulations of the Internet and the way they impact the workplace. It may result in the inability to properly cope with managers’ functions, including the appropriate planning of workplace procedures and organizing the working process. Assuring that new regulations are clearly stated in codes of conduct and followed by all team members would make the workplace more effective.
