In What Ways is Scripture Unique among all Other Writings?

928 words | 4 page(s)

The Scriptures are unique among all other writings in the fact that they are inspired by God. The Bible is made up of many different dictations of past and future events. The authors were inspired by God to transcribe the words He wanted shared. Most importantly, it claims that it is words from God, essentially validating its existence. All of the scientific challenges and attempts to disprove it, has not successfully proven that it is not in fact the word of God. Sadly, I have had my own personal disbeliefs at times that allowed me to challenge the Bible and its contents in some manner. Going back to the Bible, I continually find words of direction and encouragement that allow me to know that God is speaking to me through His Scriptures.

Comparing the Scriptures to other writings is difficult because they are very different in context. Contrary to popular belief, a lot of scriptures do not claim to be the word of God speak. “The “scriptures” of Hinduism and Buddhism never claim to be a revelation from God for the obvious reason that the eastern god is not a Person who speaks. Rather, they claim only to be human speculation. Likewise, the sacred Chinese books claim no supernatural inspiration or authority, Confucianism being less a religion than a venerable moral tradition.” (DeLashmutt, 2013) Hinduism and Buddhism are religious beliefs that are guided by their scriptures. Scriptures that were in fact written by man. Religious men can have great insight, but it would not be comparable to what God could inspire or provide. I am not here to discredit their personal beliefs or their Scriptures, but clearly this is a distinguishing factor that separates Scripture from all other writings. One is dictated from God and others are made my man.

God’s presences is made clear to me through the scriptures. For example, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world” (Psalms 19:1-4) I have to ask, have you ever laid on the ground and just stared at the sky? There is no way to describe the breathtaking beauty that is there. I feel that this is when I am the closest to God. There is no explanation for the formation of clouds in the sky, the sun setting perfectly with its warm rays reaching down, and the birds singing quietly in the background. The surreal world for which we live and for one brief minute, it’s almost as if God is there. This is one way I feel that God reveals Himself to mankind. Through the unexplainable beauty and function of the world in which we live.

Another example of what the Bible teaches about God’s revelation of himself to mankind can be found in Romans 1:20. Paul writes, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature– have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse” (Romans 1:20) I believe that this is what is shown to us daily. Not visions of God speaking to us, or religious leaders dictating to us, but what we can see. Nature changing, animals reproducing, and children learning. Much like the sun rising and setting, these things are not things that happen by chance. They reveal God, and validate His word on a daily basis.

I have read many different books. I have read other scriptures. Inspirational works, religious books, and so on. The difference between the Scripture and all other is its ability to be validated not only historically, but currently as well. Outside of the obvious such as nature or our individual surroundings, we have history to fall back upon. What we know about our past is based on historical knowledge. We have no real knowledge about the future until it becomes the present. However, there are many prophesies that have come to pass that were predicted centuries ago. Wars in the holy land and civil unrest among God’s people. We hold the facts presented in the history books as factual because someone was there and documented the events, therefore validating them in some capacity. The Scriptures are essentially history as interpreted and inspired by God. The intentions are for His people to learn from the past.

Going back to the Bible, I continually find words of direction and encouragement that allow me to know that God is speaking to me through His Scriptures. I feel that it is all too easy to question the validity of the Scriptures and if they are really God inspired. It is when I personally feel these questions arise that God reminds me of his infinite beauty. This is shown not only through his Scriptures, but through everyday events that we often take advantage of. Explaining how we know God exists or how His Scripture is different than any others is a very difficult thing to do. It’s like air, we don’t always have the words to explain, but we know it’s there and it’s real because we breathe it and live by it. Same thing with the word of God. The Scriptures are stepping stones and His creation is a daily reminder that He is there and that we need to live by it daily.
