Mercer University Application Letter

When I was ten years old, my mother was diagnosed with diabetes. This was a life changing event that impacted our entire family. I watched as my mother adapted to a new lifestyle that included exercise, dietary changes, and insulin shots. I vowed at that point to do all that I could to make sure that I never received that diagnosis.

As my family learned to deal with my mother’s diabetic issue, I became more interested in its cause and cure. I delved into every magazine article, book, and newspaper I could find that contained information about this dreaded disease. In addition, I helped my mother garner recipes for diabetic food dishes, and I helped her maintain her daily log of blood glucose levels and insulin shots. By the time I was eleven years old, I was a walking, talking encyclopedia of diabetes information.

One afternoon, when I was fourteen, I arrived home from school to discover that my mother had collapsed. I called 911 and checked her blood glucose level only to discover that it was over 500-a dangerously high level that indicated diabetic ketoacidosis. When the ambulance arrived I told the paramedics of my suspicion. We raced to the hospital where she was subsequently admitted to discover that my fears of ketoacidosis were confirmed. She was admitted and immediately started on an insulin drip. As I stood beside her and watched over her, I vowed to make it my life’s mission to help find a cure for diabetes.

I started looking into nursing programs to find one that would fit with my professional and personal goals. I have found this fit in Mercer University. Its affiliation with Georgia Baptist College of Nursing ensures that I will have a top notch nursing education as evidenced by its national recognition in meeting the needs of advancing health care and nursing research. With this education and training, I will be well prepared to take on the challenges of taking care of diabetic patients and uncovering a possible cure for diabetes.
