1. Highlight the effect of Centre for Disease Control’s regulations, accreditation requirements, and other standards on the risk- and quality-management functions and activities.

Hospital environments are expected to adhere to the highest safety standards and it is axiomatic that the overall environment is health-promoting. However, in reality this is not necessarily the case. Often it is seen that especially in case of public health system, the quality standards fall below standards if they are not reviewed periodically. Till as recent as 1970s, the risk prevention, safety and quality related activities in healthcare organizations were decentralized and informal. Even when such activities were centralized, there were variations across the state. The Centre for Disease Control CDC has hence developed a national accreditation program that aims to bring the risk management, safety and quality activities to a common standard in public health organizations across US (CDC, 2013). The Public Health Accreditation Board PHAB has collated the previous efforts to develop a voluntary accreditation program nationwide. (PHAB, 2013)
The core benefit of public health systems getting such an accreditation is the increased confidence among the public that the health services they receive in any public health centre nationwide adheres to similar high standards. The process of accreditation also helps individual health centres with clear suggestions, roadmaps and improvement areas. This exercise would in turn improve credibility of the individual public health centres among the public and boosts staff morale. (PHAB, 2013)
