Parenting in Mrs. Doubtfire Movie

341 words | 2 page(s)

“Mrs. Doubtfire” is an interesting film that could be great viewing material for any person who wants to understand more about parental rights. The film’s protagonist is a man named Daniel, and when his wife finally asks for a divorce, he is not given any rights to his children. Daniel does not have a steady job, he lacks a home, and his life is in seeming disrepair. For this reason, the judge extinguishes his parental rights, giving custody of the children to his wife. In response to this, he has a makeup artist transform his look, and he poses as Mrs. Doubtfire in responding to an ad for a nanny that his wife had placed. He fools her and his kids, and in the process, he is able to spend time around his children.

Eventually, Daniel’s ruse is revealed, and his ex-wife is furious that he tricked the family. At the next custody hearing, Daniel tries to argue that he has a steady job, but seeing his erratic behavior, the judge declines his request for custody. She grants full custody to the ex-wife, and Daniel is left with little more than a single supervised visit. In this case, his parental rights were curtailed because the court ultimately has the discretion to do what is in the best interests of the kids when it looks like one parent is unstable mentally.

Eventually, after a long time, all parties agree that it is best for Daniel to be in the lives of the children, and the ex-wife argues to the judge that he should have some custody rights. In this case, there was a cooperative approach, and the judge only restored Daniel’s rights on the urging of the ex-wife. This film could be a good one to watch for a person who wants a look at the ways in which the courts can have a major influence on which parent gets to see their children at which time. Parental rights can be somewhat fluid, and this movie shows that clearly.
