Reflection on Social Work Practice

The aim of Boise Parks and Recreation Kid City Program is to provide free and low-cost services to children, including assistance with homework, healthy snacks, games etc. I work in this organization as a volunteer who supervises the youth and engages it in numerous activities. The organization thus addresses the problem of children being unmotivated to engage in healthy and educational activities. It is therefore logical to assume that Boise Parks and Recreation Kid City Program focuses on the symptoms of the problem rather than on its root. To be more specific, the problem of children’s lack of interest in educational and recreational activity is foremost the result of children’s exposure to the Internet and other media sources, which leaves very little time for other activities.

The agency tries to challenge the misconception that educational engagement is initially boring and cannot evoke children’s interest. Regardless of its attempts to create an egalitarian social environment, the agency, just like any other similar organization, is structured. There are different types of volunteers and leaders that are in the position of a strong hierarchy. It is important to note, however, that in enables an effective functioning of the program.

Whilst the program initially aims to empower concrete individuals, it also makes a very full contribution to the common good. There is a strong interdependency between society and an individual, and healthy and educated people bring hope to bring about the needed changes to the well-being of society.

While engaging young people in different types of activities, I also try to establish myself as a role model. More specifically, I demonstrate respectful and tolerant behavior to all of the participants, regardless of their gender, socio-economic class, race or religion. In addition to this, I am skilled in the field of mathematics, and I try to provide the best assistance with children’s homework that I can.

It might be effective, however, to focus more on the root of the problem rather than on its symptoms. The agency might encourage children’s parent to limit their media consumption to a specific amount of time. Thus, children are likely to spend more time doing activities that are better for their self-development and health.
