Before the industrial revolution of the late 19th century, a significant proportion of world population used to live in rural areas. While they might not have had the luxuries of life we have now, they were more in touch with the nature. Fortunately, there are still cities like San Diego that allow us to both live a modern life as well as maintain our roots with the nature. San Diego is one of the major cities in California and is a major economic hub as well as tourist destination. San Diego has a mild climate most of the year which makes it an ideal place to live. The city with its vast array of beaches, diverse population, and modern living offers us the best of both worlds. Whether one wants access to one of the best beach lifestyles in America, enjoy a thriving downtown scene, or engage in unforgettable culinary experiences at one of the many restaurants, San Diego has it all. In other words, it is almost impossible to be bored in San Diego.

San Diego’s beaches offer a peaceful escape from the noise and the stress of everyday life. These beaches remind us that even progress comes with cost, thus, it pays to get in touch with the nature to clear mind. Some beaches like Mission Beach takes visitors back to old times with perfectly preserved boardwalk and other structures that have changed little over the decades. There are so many beaches that one can always find an ideal one suited to his/her lifestyle and tastes. For example, Mission Beach is popular among families and tourists but Pacific Beach may appeal to those with active surfing lifestyle or who prefer less crowded places. Still other beaches like Coronado do not just offer escape from noisy city life but invite visitors to form memorable lifetime memories as is evident by the presence of numerous romantic couples. There are even beaches like Oceanside which provide glimpse into the cultural composition of the city. A visit to Oceanside and observing the diverse cultural composition of visitors remind one why America is great, being the melting pot of cultures from all over the world. Even though San Diego earns special marks for its wide array of beaches, it is a mistake to associate the city with beach lifestyle only. San Diego also offers great city living as evident by its vibrant downtown.

San Diego’s downtown has something to offer to everyone. Unlike other major downtowns like New York and Chicago, San Diego’s downtown doesn’t feel as if it’s merely home to headquarters of some of the largest commercial enterprises. One of the best things about San Diego’s downtown is that a stroll through neighborhoods really makes history becomes alive due to perfectly preserved architecture with Spanish cultural elements. The downtown especially delights those who seek arts whether art galleries, theaters, or museums. San Diego’s Convention Center is even home to world-famous Comic-Con. There are two places everyone should visit in downtown which are world-famous San Diego Zoo and Sea World and fortunately, both are ideal for anyone from couples to families. The San Diego Zoo even has pandas which one doesn’t see often outside China and which explains why everyone raves about the zoo and compares every other zoo in the world to San Diego Zoo. Sea World allows visitors to witness the talents of Shamu the killer whale and penguins. There are daily shows which would bring smile to any face and also remind us humans are not the only intelligent and entertaining species on earth.

Like its neighbors in the state such as San Francisco, San Diego is also a food lover paradise and no visit to the city is complete without its Mexican food, especially fish tacos. But Mexican food is not the city’s only specialty and in fact, the diversity of population is only matched by the diversity of ethnic cuisine. Some of the best Thai food in American can be found at restaurants like Saffron and Amarin Thai and similarly, authentic Vietnamese food can be had at Saigon on Fifth. Japanese food at Sabuku Sushi will almost convince one that he/she is in Japan while French Concession enables one to eat Chinese food in style. One of the best thing about restaurants in San Diego is that they strive for authenticity. Instead of always creating American versions of ethnic food to appeal to local tastes as is the custom in many other cities, restaurants in San Diego allow us to experience the ethnic food as it is meant to be experienced. But it would not be an overstatement to argue that the best thing about San Diego’s food culture is seafood due to its proximity to the sea.

San Diego is an ideal mix of old and new cultures. The city has successful achieved the delicate balance between modern and traditional lifestyles. One can always escape to one of the many beautiful beaches to get in touch with the nature. The city’s downtown is not merely a commercial hub but has something for everyone to enjoy, especially those who love arts and culture. The city’s zoo is world-famous and its Sea World is must-see. The city’s diverse population is also reflected in its food culture and one can find food from almost anywhere in the world. Unlike many other cities, ethnic cuisine in San Diego is often authentic, just the way it should be.
