Over the past few years’ social media has flourished. Present statistics demonstrate that 74% of the population is on social media (Pew Research, 2014). Most individuals use social media websites as a way of keeping in touch with friends and love ones (Business Insider, 2014). However, some use social media websites for business purposes. Although there are differences in how individuals use social media, communication through social media has become a new norm in society.
According to Business Insider (2014) “Social media is now the top internet activity” (para. 6). The average amount of time individuals spend on social media per day is forty minutes (International Association of Police Chiefs, 2014). Research has further demonstrated that most people access social media websites from their smartphone rather than their computer. This allows users to access social media websites whenever they choose. Other research has demonstrated that many smartphone users regularly use Pinterest and LinkedIn (Business Insider, 2014). Although there are differences in what types of social media websites people are looking at from their smartphones, people throughout the world are becoming reliant on their smartphones to access social media websites.

The most popular social media website is Facebook. The Pew Research Center (2014) further concurs in finding that 71% of adults on social media use Facebook. Only 19% of adults report using Twitter on a daily basis (Pew Research, 2014). Some suggest that Facebook is seven times more popular than Twitter, based on the number of users each social media website attracts monthly (Business Insider, 2014).
Social media has changed the way people communicate. Everyday, people rely on social media websites to communicate with friends and family. Although social media is the most popular activity on the internet, many users are now using their smartphones in order to access social media websites.
