The video begins by explaining the multitude of nationalities that made up the Austro-Hungarian empire. The royalty was based on heredity and the financial acquirement of territories creating a substantial difference in recourses among the nationalities. Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria began to recognize that in order to protect the throne it was necessary to involve the other nationalities in politics so that they felt a sense of loyalty. This triggered unrest and hostility with Serbia. Upon a friendly political visit to Sarajevo, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria who had spent his years in service fighting for peace and avoiding war, along with his wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, was assassinated and became the catalyst that started World War I.

The assassination was the final excuse that the Austro-Hungarian empire needed in order to declare war on Serbia. One by one other nations, whether due to personal interest or political obligations due to previous treaties, entered into the war. The different accounts from diary entries of the soldiers showed the emotional extremities that soldiers from both sides and varying economic statuses experienced. Though many of them were not truly aware of the extent that the war would carry on, the images of the women left behind were consistent regardless of which soldier was writing.

The harshness of the war was explained from different angles as well. For example, this was the first war in Europe in decades and though the military equipment that was available at the time of World War I was far more advanced, there was little experience using this equipment which made it more dangerous for both sides. Additionally, the aggression from centuries of oppression increased the personal violence which was shown very disturbingly. The civilian attacks on women and children and the brutality towards the men in the towns was extreme as images of hundreds of civilians who were slain characterized the beginning of World War I.
