Technology has a direct impact on the life of inmates in both negative and positive dimension depending on the implementation process. Technology can be harnessed and effectively used to improve the lives of the inmates and the internal affairs of prisons. First, information technology can be integrated into the prisons to upgrade the security system and reduce incidences of inmates breaking away from the cells and finding their way back into society without completing their sentences. This poses a threat to the public domain; increasing incidences of crime and retaliatory attacks on the victims or case applicants for that matter. Advanced technology in security such as CCTV surveillance, hidden cameras and computerized data systems for the inmates work to heighten the level of security and ensure sanity within the facilities.

Information technology has also been used to trace telephone conversations within the prisons. Any incidence of phones being smuggled into the institutions and used to organize escape strategies can be tracked easily and disabled. The perpetrators can then be brought to book before the actualization of the plot. On the other hand, prison administrators can use it to make life more bearable for the inmates. When the inmates are treated well, it works to reduce incidences of escape attempts and internal wrangles among the inmates. Giving them opportunities to learn technical courses and basic computer knowledge works to empower them. Moreover, equipping them with knowledge and expertise keeps the prisoners engaged and up to beat with the advancing technology and upon their eventual release, they can easily fit into the society.

As is the case in high-profile companies with tight security levels, technology has been a cornerstone in ensuring stability and overall security in such institution to safeguard their data and crucial secretive company information. The correctional facilities and prison facilities need to upgrade their security even more given the nature, character and attitude of most individuals housed in these facilities. There is an urgent need to allocate funds and resources to investing in upgrading the security facility systems beyond the concrete wall and steel bars and ensuring safety within and outside the correctional facilities. Furthermore, today’s prisoners are very knowledgeable on information systems and how these institutions operate; hence the prison administrators need to be five steps ahead to be in a position to detect any malicious plans before hand.

On the other hand, technology can cause havoc within the correctional institution where prisoners have utilized it to enhance crime even while in prisons. Some get to escape without a trace owing to their vast knowledge on technology and how it operates-enabling them to strategize on how best to beat the systems.

Giving prisoners access to media such as television keeps them informed on current events. This information may be used as a tool to strategize for other malicious activities. Correctional facilities that keep all their information and vital data in their online platforms become very vulnerable owing to the increased incidences of online hackers and cybercriminals breaking into the system. Access to such information by unauthorized personalities enables them to manipulate data and tamper with crucial information. This derails the course of justice and makes criminals go escort free with no trace. This is a clear demonstration of how technology may be used against the concerned parties if measures are not put in place.

In essence, information technology can be used to improve the livelihood of inmates and make operation of these correctional facilities manageable even with few administrators on board. With everything computerized and using advanced technology, the administrator are in a position to obtain whatever information they need with much ease and ensure that no data is lost or misplaced as is the case of manual management. However, the technology itself may be used to work against the institution hence the urgent need to practice caution and ensure maximum professionalism.
