The Grappling Issues of the United States Postal Service

398 words | 2 page(s)

Firstly, the United States Postal Service (USPS) could choose to separate its core business and businesses it has engaged in within the recent past that are profit oriented. The USPS’s core function is to provide first-class mail services. As a result, it could be split between the public and private sectors. The differentiation of duties could help bridge the institution’s dilemma as the core business could be efficiently managed by the government. Commercial ventures are better suited for the private sector based on this approach (Hiltzik, 2015).

The second manner in which the USPS problem can be sorted deals solely with the organization’s primary function. Past data shows a negative trend in the business ventures started by the USPS. Some economists have claimed that these businesses could actually be moving the institution towards bad financial grounds that will involve a large taxpayer bailout in the future. As such, this solution proposes that USPS focuses on efficiently delivering mail, a function that should be fully integrated into the public sector (McNicoll, 2015).

Methods used to come up with the Solutions
Correlation analysis is employed in the development of solutions. The trend where the USPS has worked to maintain both its commercial ventures and its primary focus showcases a disastrous future (Hiltzik, 2015). This merger is negatively correlated to the organization’s success. For that reason, it requires some sort of intervention before it is deemed a failed institution.

Critical thinking dictates that someone cannot repeat an action that is hurting and expect generating different results. The management must recognize issues plaguing the organization and their relation to the new ventures taken up by USPS. A careful analysis of the discrepancies seen between the period when USPS did not have commercial ventures and its financial health after incorporating these features should shed light on their impact to its survival (McNicoll, 2015). The USPS needs to work together with the public to develop solutions that safeguard its interests. As a large number of people would not wish to see the institution removed from the society, it would be prudent to develop an efficient delivery system based on the input of those it serves.
