The reading is about the western religions are Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The readings explains that the religions share a common relationship regarding the belief about God. The three religions are referred to as “Abrahamic” religions because of their common Abraham of the Old Testaments roots. Therefore, they worship the God of Abraham. The thinking of the three religions was influenced by the Greek philosophers such as Aristotle and Plato. The central issue in the reading concerns the belief held by various religions regarding the existence and influence of God or god. According to the reading, either Plato or Aristotle do not understand the appearing of God in the Old Testament. Also, philosophers have had different views regarding the God himself and His actions. In the reading, philosophers, anthropomorphism is used to describe the perceptions of gods as being more or less human. Other philosophers argue that religious groups refer to their god according to how they look and they would prefer their god to look like them. For instance, philosophers such as Xenophanes argue that if animals could have hands to draw or work as human beings, they could have drawn god according to their shape. Furthermore, Xenophanes noted that Ethiopians make their gods black. The reading provides different aspects of anthropomorphism regarding the beliefs of different religious groups such as Christians, Hebrews and traditional religions.

The reading from the book explains that religions groups believed that their god had the power to help them. According to the Old Testament, the God of the Hebrew sided with them during war. The Old Testament describes God has being merciful and full of justice. God is also described as loving and caring. However, there is no prove on what extent that God is loving. It is just an approximation. Love cannot be measured, and God cannot be understood as caring because He is not seen. God is immortal according to the scripture emphasis. On the other hand, the traditional conception of God believe that God is omnipotent meaning that He is all-powerful by being the creator of the universe. The conception belief that God is omnificent meaning that He is all knowing. He understands the present and future experiences of His people since He is the creator of the Universe. Also, the traditional conception argues that God is omnipresent meaning that He is always present everywhere. The reading explains that the traditional religion belief that God has emotions, for instance, the Old Testament describes God as “jealous”, and the part about “the wrath of God”. All this information is to provide understanding regarding the various beliefs of religious groups towards God and their respective understanding of God’s abilities.
