Tweet Science: Article Review

322 words | 2 page(s)

The title of this article, “Tweet Science,” was likely chosen by the author Joe Hagan because of its contrast. One might not think of tweets or anything related to them as being remotely scientific, but the process behind the Twitter that users see every day is actually very intricate. I picked this article because it provides an in-depth look at both the good and the bad of what goes on behind Twitter’s doors and who decides what the purpose of which feature is.

This article seems to be about what really goes into making a social media platform as huge as Twitter has become. Although it was published over three years ago, it has some relevance today as artists, celebrities, and even politicians are beginning to understand the appeal of the 140-characters-or-less environment. Twitter allows for an immediate exchange of information, more so than even Facebook does.

Even though Twitter has millions of users, some of them are spam or bot accounts and some of them belong to people who either rarely log in or make an account and then forget about it. Even so, Twitter is constantly active, so much so that when Michael Jackson died there were so many tweets per second that the Twitter servers crashed and had to be rebooted. Since then, Twitter has of course increased its server strength, but that is a fairly good representation of the scope of its influence.

This entire article was full of things I did not know beforehand, such as the fact that there are lots of bot accounts on Twitter. Even so, I was more struck by how the author was able to weave narrative and statistic together to create a complete picture of Twitter, what it had become as of 2011, and how its origins tied into its story as a whole.
