Unemployment is a state of being jobless and actively searching for a job. Many young people are studying hard with the hope that they will get employed and earn lucrative salaries. Finishing education and getting a job is the dream of many people. They hope to get employed so that they can establish their own life and family independently. Securing a good job comes with a lot of benefits such as being economically and socially independent. People with low skills and education find it difficult to secure employment. This affects their social futures. Sometimes they suffer from distress and stigma. Their families also are directly affected. A society that creates employment for its people is known to be economically stable; people are able to provide for themselves, parents can afford to pay for their children’s education, improved living conditions and can afford accessing health services.

In the 21st century, unemployment has been one of the social and economic threats to millions of people around the world. The number of unemployed people has been on the increase. Also, the rate of unemployment has been increasing around the world affecting the social norms of diverse societies. Unemployment has caused significant isolation of a large number of young people and adults. Economic depression experienced in the 2008 resulted in a high number of employees laid off. The living standards of people has gone. People cannot be able to acquire secondary needs that they used to enjoy when they were employed.

From my personal perspective, being unemployed can be a painful experience. It can be difficult for me to pay my bills, purchase the basic needs and even pay for my education. Unemployment can also make me think of engaging in illegal activities such as crime. Unemployment can harm my development and my future life. It can make it hard for me to acquire the required skills and experience necessary in the job market. My living standards can also be affected. I can be able to cater for my family also. My life can be significantly affected both socially and economically.

From my everyday knowledge, unemployment has resulted in many people committing illegal activities such as crime, drug dealing and robberies. Unemployment has reduced the income of people. This has resulted in families getting poor causing poverty. The unemployed spend much time searching for employment. The time and energy could have been spent in mobilizing the available resources to improve their lives and eradicate poverty.

Being unemployed renders makes people lack the ability to acquire a mortgage to own their homes. It can be challenging for people to pay their mortgage that can result in foreclosure. A neglected property, foreclosed home and a vacant house can result in the crumbling of the housing industry. The economy is also affected when people spend less in buying goods and paying for services. The Industries are also hurt by the low revenues. As a result, employees are laid off and remain jobless causing social and psychosocial pain to them and their families.

Unemployed people sometimes suffer from psychological effects. This causes overall effects on the unemployed person’s health. Too much stress can result in depression. This can be dangerous to the mental health of a person. Even though the initial effects of being unemployed cannot be substantial or easily identifies, they can increase gradually and take a toll on someone’s health. Chronic unemployment can make a person to become depressed. Depression can cause sleepless nights, lack of appetite and affect the normal mental performance of a person. Being unemployed for a long period of time can result in a person having negative feelings such as low self-esteem. The effects can also be prolonged even after the person gets employed. When a person takes long to acquire employment, it gets more challenging for them to get employed. Chronic unemployment results in several self-perpetuating effects such as feeling less attractive to possible employers.

In a nutshell, unemployment breeds several social problems such as crime, drug abusing among the youths, dishonesty, political instability, gambling and theft. Unemployment causes the social security of our society to be jeopardized. Unemployment makes people to lose faith in peace and democratic values. Thus, results in political instability witnessed in several countries globally. People feel that the government is not doing enough to provide them with employment. The political riots witnessed in our society is due to frustrations of the people to acquire employed and the lack of ability by the governing agencies to create employment.
