Geotechnical engineering is the branch that applies mechanics and geology to the design and implementation of civil engineering projects. Geotechnical engineers thus have to be competent in geology to understand the behavior of different earth materials they may work with. They are engaged in constructing safe foundations for buildings and bridges, evaluating groundwater supplies and slope stability, designing tunnels, dams, embankments, channels etc.
