Public Education

355 words | 2 page(s)

Of all of the issues surrounding us today, perhaps the most vital of these is the issue of public education. Public education is at the heart of our democracy, but everywhere I look, it seems that the government is intent on dismantling it. This issue is dear to my heart because I am a product of the public education system, and I do not like what I am witnessing right before my very eyes. I still have siblings who are in public school and they deserve to have a good education and not be caught up in this battle between government and the education system.

I and my family have always attended public school, but when I tell people that I go to public school they look at me with sorrow filled eyes and apologize. Big government has done everything in its power to tear down the institution of public education nationwide. State governments are reducing teacher benefits and salary. In some states, teachers have not received a salary increase in almost a decade, so with the increase in the cost of living, these teachers are actually taking a pay cut. States are also decreasing the amount of funding for schools. Programs and perks for teachers have been cut nationwide, but they have been burdened with an increase in workload including never ceasing paperwork. Teachers and students are overburdened with high stakes testing that is extremely stressful for everyone. As a result, fewer and fewer people are going into the education, and one day in the very near future, this will negatively impact our entire nation.

The dismantling of public education is of great concern to me since it will be something that could have an impact on my future. Our founding fathers saw public education as a right for all Americans, and they did not intend for this educational system to be squandered away. Unless we start letting our voices be heard against the travesty of tearing down public education, we may very well one day be faced with not having a public education but a for profit education system run by big business.
