General education is related to knowledge, skills, values, and mind habits that are acquired to prepare students for successful performance in their major. These skills help students to adapt to their professional lives upon graduation. General education is based on the Core Curriculum. It is a set of course requirements for general education that all students must meet regardless of their major (Nicholls State University). General education is an important step that every student is obliged to make so to be well prepared for professional challenges. Mount Royal University states that the purpose of general education is to help graduators develop and communicate their understanding of the world, where they live and perform. It is a multistage process with a set of rule and procedures that every student is obliged to follow.

If a child wants to get General Education, they should meet specific requirements. These requirements may vary depending on the state or educational establishment. General education imposes age restrictions on participation. In most cases, a student must be at least 16 years old (in some state they must be 18 years old). The next requirement for enrollment is student`s status and achievements. Many of educational establishments offer educational options. For instance, Illinois State University provides students with three requirement options. The first option implies 13 courses and suits students of the next types: beginning freshmen, students who have not obtained a baccalaureate degree, and students from post-secondary institutions which are regionally accredited. The second option is for transfer students of different educational backgrounds. The third option of general education is for those participants who have completed a baccalaureate-oriented degree (Illinois State University). Each university has its program and requirements for the enrollment.

For freshmen, the participation in a General Educational Seminar is required during the first year of enrollment. GESM aims at satisfying one of the GE Core Literacy requirements. They are not obliged to participate in the General Educational Seminar. For transfer students, it is required to participate in at least two of Core Literary Classes. If students meet age and status requirements, they can move on to the next stage which is the selection of course. According to the curriculum, students should enroll in a fixed number of courses. Students can choose from Arts and Humanities, Social and Behavioral Science, English Composition, Mathematics, Wellness and Health, Information Technology, Communication, Diversity, Biological and Physical Sciences. Each of disciplines implies a great variety of courses, and a student can pick up any of them. In many cases, students ask for the assistance of their tutors.

When a student picks up the required number of courses, they should have a specific number of hours per week. Time amount for each course is fixed and depends on discipline and university. To obtain GE diploma, students pass the exam only once. The exam must be taken during the freshman year or first semester at college. Prior to passing the in-person exam, students pass it online. If their score is less than 22, they are not accepted to pass the in-person exam. Students make the following step in order to register for online test: students should be at least 16 years old. They pay testing fee that varies depending on the state. Prior to taking the test, students prepare for the exam. They rely on multiple resources, including the GED Testing Service, which offers low-cost and effective assistance (Illinois State University). Some colleges and communities provide their students with supportive materials for test preparation.

Upon preparation, students register on the GED website and create an online account, where they insert their personal information. Upon the creation, students can log in and choose subject and the testing center. The fourth step is to take the test. It usually takes more than seven hours to complete all tests sections of the GED exam. Prior to 2014, all students were required to do the test in all four sections. Since 2014, students are allowed to sit for those sections that they would like to tackle at once. It is much easier for candidates to pass the test on one section than spend almost eight hours to complete all of them. The longest test portions are language and arts that last about 150 minutes.

The math exam portion lasts 115 minutes. About 90 minutes are dedicated to science and social studies. The GED test conditions satisfy the needs of people with disabilities. For instance, there are special accommodations that allow people with vision impairments, handicaps, or learning disorders to take this test. The accommodations are provided upon the student`s request and encompass extended deadline, screen-reading software, etc. Examinees can access the GED website to check their score (Illinois State University). The score for examination is available during the next three hours after the exam has been passed.

In closing, general education is an effective method to acquire skills and develop capacities that prepare students for their future performance. To enroll in the General Education program, students must meet age and status requirements. The participant should be at least 16 years old, whereas some states` requirement is to be at least 18 years old. The participants are divided in accordance with their status and educational background. General Education program has different requirements for freshmen and transfer students. The amount of time spent on learning is fixed and varies according to the university. In the end, students pass the exam only once. However, they can practice online prior to passing the on-person exam.
