This brief essay will attempt to discuss the various challenges faced by both male and female students in their decisions to enroll in nursing school. One of the main challenges facing both genders is finances. Most students do not have the money to go to college and thus must consider alternative ways to pay for their education. Tuition, books, supplies, and training all add up over time. Some are lucky enough to receive grants or scholarships to help them along and others have started funding pages to ask for assistance. There is an extra level of difficulty for an adult returning to school as one may not qualify for student loan options.

A challenge facing female nursing students specifically is work-school-life balance. Many nursing students have young children and they also work part-time or full-time. Balancing their job with their family obligations and education can be a challenge. There is time that must be spent in class, preparing for class, writing essays, reading, and completing other assignments. As one delves deeper into the program, one may have to dedicate additional hours to an internship or practicum which can add stress if time is not managed well.

A challenge facing male nursing students specifically is being the oddity in a largely female dominated industry. In any hospital or clinic, most nurses are women. Flexibility, versatility, and career diversity are important factors in getting men into the profession, according to Leandro Alcovendaz Resurreccion. Further, according to 2013 U.S. Census data, in 2011, there were 3.5 million employed nurses of which 3.2 million were female and 330,000 were male. There is also the stereotype that men, in general, do not have the capability to be empathic, caring, nurturing or possess professional bedside manners. In terms of practitioner care, men have several hurdles to jump, not just educationally but also motivationally and professionally.
