Economic and Territorial Expansion

309 words | 2 page(s)

One can say undeniable that the country was divided from the start and that the Founding Fathers managed to achieve a compromise, which more or less satisfied everyone, is nothing short of a miracle. Naturally, after the Declaration of Independence, everyone was united under one struggle with the UK. The unity remained through the French-Indian War and the War of 1812. After the US remained finally secluded and away from major international interests of Europe, the division, which was so immaculately mended by the Founding Fathers started to exhibit itself even more prominently than ever before.

Jacksonian tenure of peace with the outer realm was signified by bloodshed inside the country with his ruthless policies regarding the minorities. The Indians of the East Coast were utterly demolished with the imposed forced resettlement westward to the line of frontier. This created the precedent: minorities are to be suppressed and exploited. Slavery entrenched further to the South. One could say that the US was destined to end up in the state of the civil war as far back as 1820s, because it was then that the seeds of differences between the North and the South were planted.

This unjust treatment of slaves and of Native Americans also created an inner disorder within the US: as a country that proclaims equality and freedom for one and all, it did not offer much freedom to wide groups of population. Women did not have same privileges as men too. By negating the need to solve the social issues and the necessity of a clear solution regarding equality, the US destined itself for a major conflict, which would finally explode several four decades later.
