Texans are proud people and the way that they treat their state flag is only one representation of this pride. Many communities do not fly their state flags and they are also often unrecognizable. The Texas flag went through a few different changes over the year. The flag of six different countries have flown over Texas at one point or another. The kingdom of France, the kingdom of Spain, The Mexican Federal Republic, the Republic of Texas, the Confederate States of America and the United States of America all flew over Texas at one point or another (Spain, 2010). A flag flying over the Alamo was a duplicate of the Mexican flag with 1824 in the middle to show support for the 1824 Mexican constitution. It was not long after that though that Texans wanted something more personal. One suggestion was a flag of red, white, and blue with a singular five pointed star. But Texans soon wanted something that set them apart from their former rulers. One feature that appeared in several flags was a single five-pointed star. It went through a few iterations until it was adopted into law in 1839 (Chapman, 1998).
The flag is a well designed logo. It functions well as viewed from far away. Because it has clean lines, it is easy to see the features whether the wind was blowing or not. All of the different elements of the flag can be seen even if it is hanging limp without any wind. are visible even when it is hanging limp indoors. Chapman describes “With its large elements and bold colors, it evokes qualities Texans prize.” The flag is able to echo the grace of the American flag which is not the case with other secessionists such as Mississippi and Georgia which actually includes elements of the Confederate flag (Chapman, 1998).
The flag that is flown above Texas is a source of joy as well as a representation of it. Texas fly their flag as proudly as they do because they identify themselves as Texans and are defined by where they live. People also show their love of Texas by singing the state song. Texas is probably the only state where people even know their state song, let alone sing it on a regular basis (Chapman, 1998).
Some of the pride felt by Texans could possibly stem from the history of the state. Most states did not have to fight to prove its freedoms. Texans fought in a war to protect the state while most states were carved out from territories. In a phone survey, 23% of Texans considered themselves Texans before considering themselves Americans. While most Americans hold their allegiance to the American flag, Texans have two flags flying above them (Chapman, 1998).
Finally, Chapman considers that the pride in the flag stems from the flag’s beauty. He pondits that if the flag was boring or ugly, they might not have such a strong pride in it. The only other place that he has seen such fervor for the flag was in Israel. They also have a great pride in their flag and their country. Israel also has a beautiful flag. He notes that if governments want people to take pride in their flag, they should make it beautiful (Chapman, 1998).
