Introduction AND Thesis Statement
Successful communication is critical in all walks of life. It is especially important in the context of interpersonal relationships. While some people may be able to hold on to their relationships without proper communication, chances are that without proper communication, a relationship will fail.

Explain the principles of and barriers to effective interpersonal communications. (You don’t have to list the objectives in this order, but be sure you cover all of them.)
Topic Sentence: There are many barriers that can keep people from engaging in successful interpersonal communication.
Supporting Evidence: According to Wood (2015), interpersonal communications challenges arise because of a wide variety of factors, including power dynamics, mental health challenges, and general noise in the environment.
The author suggests that people struggle to communicate well because of issues with their external environment and because of differing understandings of communication context.
This matters because it suggests that there are relatively easy fixes to the problems that can plague interpersonal communication. While some challenges may be too big to fix easily, other problems can be eliminated.

Analyze the role of communication in developing and maintaining one’s self-concept, self-image, and self-esteem.
Topic Sentence: Successful communication is critical in helping people develop the proper self-image, self-concept, and self-esteem.
Supporting Evidence: Gonzalez (2014) suggests what we all know to be true in our daily lives’that successful communication in-person can help self-esteem more than the current text-based communication favored in modern society.

The author means that text-based communication is a way in which people hide themselves, while face-to-face communication can help them feel more confident and get to know their own voice in a literal way.
This matters because it lays the groundwork for a plan by which a couple could not only improve their relationship through communication, but also improve their own personal self-feelings.

Differentiate appropriate levels of self-disclosure and emotional intelligence in various relationships.
Topic Sentence: Self-disclosure needs and norms can vary depending upon the type of relationship. Likewise, a different level of emotional intelligence may be needed in different relationship settings
Supporting Evidence: Bazarova (2012) suggests that in personal relationships that are romantic, more self-disclosure is needed, but the Internet sometimes allows for inappropriate self-disclosure to the public at larger.
Explanation of the central points from the article(s): The author suggests that the Internet makes it much easier for people to over-share things they might not feel the need to share otherwise in an interpersonal context.

Conclusion ‘ Relationships depend heavily on successful communication in order to work. There are many barriers that can keep this from happening, and people who do not successfully communicate can suffer from low self-image and self-esteem.
