Is Immigration a Problem?

305 words | 2 page(s)

Western societies like the U.S. have long been celebrated for their generous attitudes towards immigration. However, there has been a backlash against immigration lately, not only in the U.S. but also many European countries because of the perception that immigration causes social and economic costs on the society. The fact is that immigration brings more benefits than costs, and much of the criticism is rooted in fears rather than facts.

The immigration helps alleviate the problems caused by an again population. Many developed countries are facing both declining birth rates as well as an aging population which would lead to shrinking of a labor force in the long run were it not for immgration. Immigration helps bring young labor to the country. Immigration also helps meet the labor needs in the industries where they may be a shortage of local labor. Such industries include the agricultural and construction sectors in the U.S.

Similarly, generation attitudes towards immigration makes it easier for a country to attract top talent from all over the world. Immigration also helps create more open-minded and tolerant socieities. As people from different backgrounds interact with each other, they become mutual respect and develop greater tolerance for opposing point-of-views.

While immigration carries many benefits, it is also important to acknowledge potential costs. The immigration may hurt the local labor with limited education and skills set as immigrants might drive down wages due to an increase in supply of labor. Immigration may also weaken the rule of the law through illegal employment and may help expand the underground economy, resulting in loss of tax revenue for the government.
