Memoir About Seattle

905 words | 4 page(s)

Of all of the places I have lived in my life, Seattle has been the most fulfilling. I have spent two years in the city, and those who knew me might say that those were the best years of my life. The educational and recreational opportunities afforded to me by the city of Seattle have been top-notch, and I have found my niche in dealing with the weather and some of the challenges that Seattle presents. While there may be other cities that suit other people, Seattle is the city that fits my personality, and it is a place I would recommend to all.

My love for Seattle stems, at least in part, from the ways in which it has provided me with opportunity. I have studied English at the University of Washington for one year, and I have spent another year at North Seattle Community College. The universities in the city are some of the best in the world, and in addition to attracting top professors, they attract students who are able to make the college experience more complete. It is easy to learn from these fellow students and their experiences. Seattle seems to attract a brand of person who can have balance in his or her life. Not only do the students at UW and North Seattle work hard, but they also know how to be laid back and have a bit of fun at the end of a long work day. This combination is what Seattle is all about, at least in my mind.

Part of what makes Seattle special is the presence of distinct neighborhoods where people can truly make a home. Northgate of course has the mall, but it also has culture. Because the mall is there, it is a place where people come to take in the restaurants and the bars. Likewise, this neighborhood can some quiet at night, and it is just far enough outside of the city’s center that one feels like he is in a remote location. Seattle, to me, offers the proper combination of city life and laid-back leisure. In other cities, you might feel trapped by the size, and you might feel as if you can never escape the urban scene. This is not the case in Seattle. Rather, it is a place that promotes balance, and the Northgate neighborhood is the perfect example of that.

Some people complain about the weather in Seattle. They would advise people not to come to Seattle because it is going to rain more than two-hundred days out of the year. This is certainly true, and there is no reason to lie about it. If you are going to live in Seattle, you have to get used to living in that kind of weather. What I have learned, though, is that there is no such thing as bad weather. There is only such a thing as bad gear. As long as one is dressed properly and has the proper gear, it is possible to live a full life despite the constant presence of rain. I have even come to appreciate the rain at times. It is soothing, and there are few things better than taking a nap outside while the rain is trickling down. To people who live in Seattle, the rain may be a nuisance sometimes, but there are other times when it becomes a distinctive feature that adds something meaningful to their lives. I can be counted among those individuals, as the rain is highly enjoyable for me.

For people who have a significant other, there are places in Seattle that make being a couple really fun. My girlfriend and I like to spend time at Alkai Beach, soaking up the sun whenever that is possible. We also like the Greek Lake area, where one can see all different kinds of wildlife and take in beautiful scenes. The ability to get out of the house and head outdoors is one of the central features in Seattle, and if a person does not take advantage of it, that person would surely be missing out. My girlfriend and I have shared numerous picnics, lunches, and other scenes in the city’s beautiful parks, so we understand that they contribute heavily to the high quality of life that the city offers its residents.

I will never forget my experiences in Seattle, especially in the city’s downtown. There, one will find some of the world’s biggest and most impressive companies. Microsoft has its headquarters in down Seattle, and other companies are flocking to the city to take advantage of its strong, educated workforce. In addition, the city has the original Starbucks, which may be a tourist destination to some, but it is an indication of the heart, soul, and history of Seattle. I have found that downtown is the perfect combination of old and new. In addition to showing the future of Seattle through high-level architectural design, downtown also showcases some of the older, historical things that make this city a special place. My decision to come to Seattle was one of the best that I have ever made. The institutions here – from the schools to the businesses to everything in-between – are strong and special. The people are what make it great, though. The people understand how to have a good time, and they are the kinds of low-pressure individuals that you would want to have around.
