Scientific Research in the News

356 words | 2 page(s)

An article of interest on the topic of global warming that is in the news this week is from the Chicago Tribune dated July 5, 2017, by Chelsey Harvey and is entitled “Scientists are Starting to Clear Up One of the Biggest Controversies in Climate Science” located online at http://www.chicagotribune.com/

In this article, the issue of the controversy surrounding global warming is being studied. Specifically, the article addresses the temperature increase the Earth could experience as a result of greenhouse gas emissions. The author claims that new research has been developed to address his question. She explains a study published just this week in the journal Science Advances addresses that there is, on a basic level, a difference between what the scientifically-derived climate models have suggested about future changes in the Earth’s climate (Harvey, 2017). Harvey goes into quote a bit of detail about the results of the study and explains how greenhouse emissions are measured, how carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of the Earth affects the Earth’s surface temperature, and what previous scientific research has indicated regarding the rise of the Earth surface temperature and predictions about future temperature rises.

The relevance of this research is that it points to differing scientific conclusions being drawn about how fast the Earth’s surface temperature would rise given certain carbon dioxide increases from greenhouse gasses. The author explains this relevance as a concern amongst many of the predominant scientists studying this issue. Because carefully planned and executed experiments have been conducted over the past several decades with differing results, there has been both environmental and political turmoil regarding how much study is needed, what types of study is needed, and how funding should be attributed to this issue. The most important point that the study in this article makes is that “the research indicates that the models and the historical record are not so different after all, and that there are certain large-scale climate feedback processes still unfolding” (Harvey, 2017).
