Virtual Reality is still so new that there are only a few valid studies floating around. Scholars have merely tapped the surface. The study of emotions is such a broad subject that the amount of nuances one how to investigate is so large that there are good arguments on both sides. However, these arguments are based on emotions and emotions are not definitive. When combining social media and how people react emotions rise to another level. Friends argue about grammar and punctuation. Then someone else responds by insulting the person with a “get over it” or something of that sort. An entire argument may erupt over one lack of etiquette comment such as someone not entering a nicety after a birthday card lands on a timeline. I have seen people become irate because someone started a conversation under a post of a little child’s picture. The worst argument I have seen with an eruption over a virtual game where someone threatened.

Facebook has many virtual games, such as Farmville, where the gamer not only tends to your farm, but you tend to others. The point of this game is to foster kindness and compassion. In fact, the gamer get points for giving your neighbors tools and helping them have a better farm than you. In Sorority Life, a popular game with the high school girls, the gamer gets to dress up. It is an advanced version of Barbie which my little niece loves to play. Then, there are mystery games such, as Disney Ghosts of Mistwood on a Scavenger Hunt and create various buildings to help the gamer find your Aunt. Helping others is another wonderful theme in virtual games. Ruby Blasters is a gentle game for kids because the gamer simply burst the rubies in order to get points.

As the gamer get older, Facebook has serious games such as Criminal Case where you become a Forensics Investigator. The photos are graphic with ripped out guts and severed arms. The thought process behind the inventor of these games seems to be the ugly and more violent as you get older. Unfortunately, virtual games are available to everyone. There is no way of telling the age of someone when purchasing a game or in the case of Facebook download the games. It is very simple to lie about your age when there is no one watching.

Safety is still key, and minds of all of us are in jeopardy. Emotions are not concrete; they are affected by what we do and what we see minute by minute. It is critical to balance virtual reality with the physical life. I love my phone and the ability to text people without impacting their life, so I can communicating my needs and wants without delayed gratification in place, but if I only live in virtual time, I realize I am giving up the opportunity to participate in something bigger than me, society!
