The Management of Post-Operative Patients

348 words | 2 page(s)

Anyone who has surgery necessitating the use of anesthesia will be taken to the post anesthesia care unit (PACU) upon completion of surgery where nurses will monitor individuals, checking their temperatures, blood pressures, and pulse, reviewing the quality of bandages, regulating IVs and providing pain medication as needed; they may need reassurances and may be of any age ranges (ASPAN, 2013).

The Martha Rogers theory believes humans are integral to the universe, and that the human and the environment are one; with a human having an energy field that constantly exchanges energy with the environment (Current Nursing, 2012). Margaret Newman’s theory is the theory of health as an expanding consciousness, interacting with the universe and the energy contained therein, one that takes its basis from Roger’s theory (Current Nursing, 2012). Susan Kleiman’s theory relates to humanism, looking at human centered nursing as the necessary foundation of providing quality care (Kleiman, 2013). The first two theories are very similar to each other, with one feeding into the other, while Kleiman’s theory looks at it from a similar approach, but for different reasons.

A PACU nurse will be able to successfully integrate all three of these theories into their care of patients during their time in the unit, working to ensure that not only are they treated in the most humane manner possible during their time there, but that they are able to maintain an upbeat and positive attitude and work to keep the attitudes of their patients up, those who are awake, allowing for positive energy to be generated from both within themselves and fed to them from an external source, serving to provide the “good vibes” that a patient will need in order to be able to get better in the quickest manner possible.
