Animals and Zoo

601 words | 3 page(s)

I consider myself a lover of animals. It should not come as a surprise I have struggled with the idea of animals in the zoo for a long time. I wish there was a solution that prevented the suffering of the animals while also allowing the humans to watch these majestic animals in their natural habitat but unfortunately this is not practical for the majority of people on earth. After carefully considering the pros and cons of zoos, I believe the pros of zoos outweigh the cons, especially, because zoos provide the best option to see these majestic animals up-close.

While one can always watch videos or see pictures of animals, nothing compares to seeing the animals in person. If we close zoos, the only option will be to travel all over the world to see these animals. This will not only be time-consuming but also economically non-practical for everyone except a tiny minority of global population. Zoos provide valuable service to the society by allowing everyone, irrespective of their economic and social class, to enjoy the beautiful sight of animals. It is also important to realize that the citizens have access to very few public recreational places in many cities in the world. As a result, the utility value of the zoos to the citizens is even greater in such cities.

Zoos can play a valuable role in our efforts to preserve the global diversity of animals, especially, those at the risk of dying out. Zoos allow people to see animals up-close and serve as a powerful reminder of how empty our world would be without these animals. Zoos can inspire people to ratchet up the pressure on the governments and the private businesses to do more to save the animals, especially, those whose very survival is threatened by a number of manmade events such as climate change and loss of natural habitat. Videos and pictures of animals often evoke powerful emotional reactions in us. One can only imagine the powerful emotional reaction seeing animals at the zoo may evoke among citizens, and inspire them to add their voice to the protection of animals around the world. The animals in the zoo remind us we share this home with many other species.

Even if one is in support of zoos, one cannot ignore the selfish element in taking such a position as it deprives the animals of the opportunity to grow up in their natural habitat. However, we can take certain measures to show our appreciation for these animals by taking good care of them in order to minimize their suffering. The zoos should spare no expense in making sure the animals are well fed and their enclosures do allow for reasonable freedom of movement. It is also advisable to replicate the natural habitat of the animals as much as possible. In addition, the zoos should donate some of the revenue to conservation efforts so that some good does come out of the sacrifices of these animals.

It is a struggle to form an opinion on keeping animals in zoos because zoos do deprive the animals of the chance to live their lives in their natural habitat. However, the pros of zoos outweigh the cons. The zoos are the best option for the majority of the people in the world to see animals up-close. The zoos may also inspire the visitors to apply pressure on governments and businesses to do more to save endangered animal species. We should make the lives of animals in the zoos as comfortable as possible because this is the minimum we can do for them.
