Human Rights In North Korea

350 words | 2 page(s)

Student A:
The human rights violations in DPRK do indicate a need, solely from a humanistic perspective, for intervention, yet, perhaps it is not the place of the West to do so. Simply because the practices of the West include less human rights violations does not mean that all practices are for the best. As we are all aware, the West does not simply stop when it butts in, but rather continues working to force its ideas on the populations and countries that it enters.

These individuals are concerned for providing for their families, desiring for their families to be happy, healthy, and self-sufficient, yet there are daily news stories about this not being the case in the West. It is a case of what is best for the people, yet who are we to say that we know what is better for them? Isn’t that a bit presumptuous?

Student B:
I agree with you in that the individuals within North Korea seem to have happy and peaceful existences; however I will state that I believe that they have been able to create this type of society because they do not have the outside influences that come with globalization. If they are anti-globalization, it is because it works for them at this time. While they may find that globalization may help their society, there is also the chance that it will adversely affect it to a large degree. If you had a happy and peaceful life, with little strife, would you want someone else coming in and telling you their way was better? Maybe in some respects it would be, but there is no guarantee that you would be as happy as you were before.

Westernization tends to bring with it a desire for the material, and with that material desire comes a decrease in the level of happiness of the individuals within that society. I believe that North Korea should continue to be allowed to remain anti-globalization until they choose otherwise, for to do any less could cause an issue within their very culture and way of life.
