Narrative Arc, Dramatic Question, Character Obstacles

The story, which I intend to develop has a more complex point of view, since there are essentially two protagonists: the widowed refugee Aminah and the social worker Maria. Therefore, in the story, there will be a lot of juxtaposition between the two point of views, since one of the points of the narrative is that although both women are in radically different situations, they share a bond, a similar character and existence. It is this bond that allows them to develop a close relationship of friendship. At the same time, they both share weaknesses and vulnerabilities. Aminah is clearly in a place of vulnerability as a young widow, a refugee in a foreign country. Maria, also, however is in a place of vulnerability, since as a social worker, she must struggle against a bureaucratic system so as to help Aminah. Both characters thus feel powerless. The point of view of the story will reflect this shared powerlessness, but also the strength that the two characters gain from feeling that they are not alone, through their mutual support, which allows them to confront their problems.

The narrative arc of the story would begin with Aminah’s arrival by foot in Slovenia, a small country in Eastern Europe. The story will begin at this point, not showing the difficult journey of Aminah. Instead, this difficulty will be shown in the despair she faces when she first arrives at the refugee center as a young pregnant widow. There she immediately meets Maria who is overcome by the story of Aminah. Maria’s character is deeply affected by Aminah’s story. Much of the story, therefore, would center around a dialogue between the two women. For example, Maria sees Aminah and speaks with her for a few days and vows to help her. However, both women are faced with the problems of attempting to allow Aminah her goal which is passage to Germany. The story would then move to some of the bureaucratic absurdities and difficulties which Maria encounters as she tries to find out from the authorities how to help Aminah. Some of the particularities of these bureaucratic absurdities can be developed through research on real life cases. This is meant to show the absurd system which the two women, now united, must face. The conclusion of the story would be the women overcoming these hurdles, and Aminah being allowed to go to Germany, since I wish to show how two essentially powerless people can nevertheless realize their goals against an inhuman and faceless system.

The dramatic question at the basis of the story is essentially constitutive of two parts. Firstly, how is it possible for two individuals from entirely different situations to form a loving relationship? In one sense, therefore, this aspect of story plot also relates to character motivation. Secondly, I want to show how, as mentioned, two powerless people can realize their goals, and this is essentially the story plot, as the reader goes through their experiences. In one respective, this is also an idea of character motivation, since both characters are motivated to realize the overcoming of bureaucratic and systematic obstacles. From one perspective, the planned story does not have a clear distinction between character motivation and story plot, but these two elements shape each other.

Clearly, the main obstacle to achieving character ambition is the external constraints produced by such a system, which does not consider human rights and may also have elements of systematic racism and discrimination. However, I would like more to emphasize that many times in a bureaucracy there are contradictory and even absurd rules, which appear senseless. Overcoming these external obstacles drives the motivation of both main protagonists.
