Internet is among the best inventions in the world today. Its importance is not only immense to our individual lives but also to organizations. Importantly, internet has become one of the best sources of information about any aspect. Internet provides a variety of information for different fields-be it students or employees of an organization. Because of the internet, people can be updated about different information of various activities all over the world. Although the internet has had a great impact on the production of an organization, it can adversely affects it negatively if not well used, especially by employees.

To begin, employees must be clear and sure of the information that they post on the internet. Moreover, they should confirm and ensure accuracy before they post any information. Clear and accurate information builds the reputation of a company while posting information that cannot be justified negatively taints a company’s image. As a result of this, all employees should authenticate any information before posting it on the internet. From the article “What the Hell Happened to Boston.com,” the site had posted a story the previous evening that it could not account for, only to retract a few minutes later. In the story that it published, Professor Ben Edelman, a professor at Harvard Business School had been accused of sending a racist email to an employee of Sichuan garden. Later, the company discovered that the professor had not sent the email. In addition to that, Boston.com had posted the information without confirming if it was authentic and hence they retracted. As a result of this incident, two employees were rumored to face disciplinary actions. Also, the chief editor of the company was to be suspended for a week long. In addition to that, Boston.com also published a joke in an article and letter edited it (David, 2014).

Secondly, employees should be professional in their jobs and desist from posting funny articles on social media. Boston.com associate editor was fired and he is not even sure if he can get another job. This is because he posted an article making fun of death threats against House Speaker John Boehner (Hadas, 2015). In another article, two women were forced to go unpaid leave after they posted a photograph taken at Arlington National Cemetery. Thousands of online users were angered by their Facebook post and some even went ahead to petition for their resignation. Lindsey Stone, an employee of Plymouth had visited Arlington National Cemetery on a work-paid trip during the month of October. It was during this time that she took a photo that angered numerous people. She had taken a photo giving the middle finger and pretending to yell while standing at the tomb of a soldier next to a post with the sign “Silence and Respect.” According to Boston.com, the other worker who had accompanied Stone’s went viral and online users criticized her for being insensitive (Icy, 2012)

Even though the use of internet can produce positive results in an organization, it also can affect an organization negatively if not used properly. From the examples above, it is vivid that careless use of the internet not only affects the organization image, but also can make the employee responsible for such posts loss his or her job. No employee is forced to use the internet in any particular way and as a result; each individual must try to use it for good and productive purposes only. If used well, the internet can greatly increase the productivity of a company. All employees in an organization should be cautious when using the internet so that they cannot lose their jobs and negatively taint the reputation of the company.
