In the article ‘Money for Mortality,’ Mary Arguelles argues that there people and children in the society today are obsessed with material gain as opposed to the moral and ethical standards in that are supposed to guide them. Arguelles narrates a story that she read in a newspaper about an 8-year-old boy who got an envelope with more than 600 dollars dropped and then took it to the bank. The bank returned the money to the owner. In return, the owner appreciated by giving the boy 3 dollars.

Some people, including the boy’s teacher expressed dissatisfaction with the token. Arguelles contends that is an act that portrays high levels of disregard to human moral standards. The author also narrates a situation whereby her children were receiving money for performing well in school from their parents. In another situation, Arguelles narrates a situation where the children in the class were treated to a Pizza party whenever they read a specified number of books. Arguelles also give a classical example on when she was pregnant as a conventional representation of the society today. According to Arguelles, the material possession has held the society today in ransom. People are not able to appreciate anything without the use of money or anything material. The author argues that there is nothing material that can reward the aspects of integrity, honesty and kindness.

There are various natural motivational strategies that can suit most of the situations that are appreciated by money in the society today. For instance, a simple ‘thank-you’ was enough to the child who returned the money. On the other hand, achieving success in school is a self-motivation in itself. Consequently, Arguelles concludes that people should value the use of moral and ethical standards to achieve the satisfaction that is essential to motivate people for various achievements.
